Abstract | Software architecture is an intermediate model of the transformation of the functional requirements into the implementation design. An understanding of the intent of design decisions — especially at the architectural level of abstraction — is critical to both initial development and system evolution. In this talk, I will present a high- level view of the cognitive nature of software architectural design and the issues of capturing and reusing design intent knowledge. I will also cover a prototype study that we conducted at the University of Texas at Austin as part of a graduate course on software architecture and design intent. Teams of students used intent-based design approaches and notation systems to document intent for architectural design changes to a mature, open-source system. We hope to use the results of this study to develop repeatable empirical studies to validate the potential usefulness of intent-based modeling to system architecture and to gain insight into directions for future research. Finally, I will present other current research projects to develop tool support for capturing and reusing design knowledge and discuss how we might integrate this work into the Empirical Process Monitor. |
